A 14-year-old American boy died on Friday after accepting a challenge from a classmate, reports The Guardian.
The challenge is called the “Paquis One Chip Challenge”, which consists of eating one tortilla chip that is seasoned with the world’s strongest chillies, Carolina Reaper and Naga Jolokia.
The Guardian writes that the boy, Harris Wolobah, shortly afterwards sought out the nurse at the school in the city of Worcester in Massachusetts.
There he said he had a stomach ache.
He was picked up by his mother, Lois Woobah, and a few hours later the boy was on the road to recovery.
Then it narrowed.

Fell over suddenly
He was getting ready for entrance exams for a basketball team when he suddenly collapsed at home.
Mora tells NBC Boston that she called an ambulance, but that it was already too late.

At 16.30 on the same day that the boy ate the tortilla chips, he was pronounced dead.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, but Harris Wolobah’s mother is convinced that the tortilla chips were involved in the boy’s demise.

Removed from the shelves
Paqui, which produces the tortilla chips, has now asked the stores that sell the product to remove it from the shelves, the news agency reports AP.
A spokesperson for Paqui, which is a subsidiary of The Hershey Company, says the company is “deeply saddened by the death of Harris Wolobah” and that they feel deeply for his family.
On Paqui’s website they warn children against eating the tortilla chips.
Complained of abdominal pain – made a shocking discovery
“The Paqui One Chip Challenge is only intended for adults”, they write, and warn anyone who is sensitive to strong food, or who has food allergies, is pregnant or has underlying illnesses.
“We have seen an increase in the number of teenagers, and others, not heeding the warning. As a result – although the product complies with food safety standards – we are actively working with our retailers to remove the product from the shelves,” it says.

– Seek medical help
Paqui advises people taking on the challenge to seek help if they become ill from eating the tortilla chips.
“Seek medical help if you experience difficulty breathing, fainting or severe nausea,” it says.
Police in Worcester confirm to NBC Boston that they are investigating the death.
Death near after this
– Unbelievable pain
Lois Wolobah tells the channel that she wants to warn other parents about the dangers of the tortilla chip challenge, which has gone viral on TikTok, among others.
– The pain our family is experiencing is unimaginable, writes a relative of the boy on GoFundMe, where she has created a fundraiser for Harri Wolobah’s replacement.

– Can cause heart attack
Last year, the emergency services rushed to a school in Georgia after several students had become very ill after eating the same tortilla chips, writes The Guardian.
The police then issued a warning, saying that the tortilla chips can cause violent coughing and vomiting – and “throat injuries, chest pains, palpitations and even heart attacks”.
