China Makes Breakthrough with Huawei Mate 60 Pro’s Revolutionary Chip Technology

Jakarta

Launching Huawei Mate 60 Pro it wasn’t long ago that it was really surprising regarding the state of the art chip it has. In theory, the chip shouldn’t be made by a Chinese company.

The release of the Mate 60 Pro marks China has manufactured 5G mobile phones using advanced silicon chips deemed beyond its capabilities due to US-led export restrictions. The Mate 60 Pro is powered by the state-owned Kirin 9000s chip made by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC).

According to analysis firm TechInsights, its processor is the first to use SMIC’s state-of-the-art 7 nanometer (nm) technology and demonstrates that the Chinese government is making progress in its efforts to build a domestic chip ecosystem.

As quoted detikINET of the Guardian, Dan Hutcheson, analyst at TechInsights, told Reuters the latest development was a “slap in the face” for the US.

The most advanced chip SMIC has made before is 14nm in scale, since SMIC was barred by the US in late 2020 from procuring the necessary machinery from Dutch company ASML.

But Tech Insights believes that in 2022, SMIC will succeed in producing 7nm chips by modifying a simpler machine so that they can still be purchased freely from ASML.

Some research firms estimate that only 50% or less of 7nm chips produced this way are usable, compared to the industry norm of 90% or more. So the production failure is higher. But anyway, SMIC has succeeded in producing it.

Outside of China, the best 7nm chips are made using a process called extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV), a technology that the US is trying to keep tightly guarded against China. The Chinese government itself does not remain silent and continues to strive for higher technology for domestic chips.
