The grid is open this Thursday at the Maryse-Condé high school in Sarcelles (Val-d’Oise) but it is on the forecourt that the vast majority of teachers remain exceptionally. “Maryse-Condé cracks”, “Two classes in a room”, or even “Blocked educational projects”, can we read on the signs installed on the steps at their sides. On this first day of plenary, after three days of staggered reception, these teachers decided not to welcome their students and thus postpone the start of the school year. An assumed movement to denounce the “disastrous” conditions of this beginning of the year.
“The decision we made was not out of light of heart, but because we have no choice. We do it to be heard, for our students. We, all we want is to teach and carry out our projects, but today we simply cannot, ”say the teachers mobilized. Many: 115 out of 121 according to the teachers, 58 out of 80 expected in front of the students according to the academic inspection.
At the heart of their demands, included in a leaflet distributed to explain their approach, the question of timetables deemed “impossible”. A few examples are thus displayed: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. of lessons without a lunch break for this final year student. “Conversely, others find themselves with significant ranges of holes with the risk of facilitating the dropout”, are alarmed the teachers.
“I have a day where I have to work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with 30 minutes to eat”
According to them, the list of inconsistencies is “long”. Few classes would be spared by timetable difficulties, therefore concerning almost all of the 1,300 students in the general, technological and professional streams. With repercussions also on various projects carried out in the school.
“For the theater option, we have the teacher, the intervening actress, the funding, motivated students but no time slot to be able to organize it like the other years”, laments a French teacher. Last year, the result of this work was played in particular in front of the Guadeloupean writer Maryse Condé, whose former high school La Tourelle officially took the name at the end of January.
In January, the Lycée la Tourelle became the Lycée Maryse-Condé. The inauguration took place in the presence of the Guadeloupean author.
For teachers, these scheduling problems are all the more serious in that they come on top of other major shortages. “35 students in second, up to 37 in a class,” they announce. “Far too large” numbers in a high school located in a political district of the city and whose baccalaureate results were “more than 20 points below the national average” during the last session.
The teachers also deplore a lack of staff. “Four teaching positions not filled this Wednesday, school nurses, social workers or even accompanying persons for students with disabilities (AESH)”, they list. The establishment would have a total of only 2.5 AESH, including one “in full-time care of a single child”.
What do high school students without class think? The rare young people crossed this Thursday noon on the forecourt supported their teachers. ” They are right ! The conditions are really not good. Since Tuesday, I have already received three different schedules,” says Shaïna, 15. That of Adame, in first professional remains always problematic. “Worse than an employee,” he smiles. I have a day where I have to work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with thirty minutes to eat. With the queue at the canteen, I’d be surprised if I had time. Besides, I miss classes. It’s incomprehensible. »
“A number of points have already been settled”
On the side of the Academic Inspectorate of Val-d’Oise, we assure “to be attentive” but we want to put things into perspective. “Yes, it’s true, there have been some schedule adjustments to be made. However, the establishment is supported by a resource team to overcome and overcome these difficulties. A certain number of points have already been settled and this will continue in the days to come”, specifies Olivier Wambecke, academic director of the national education services of Val-d’Oise. As for the numbers, 35 per class “corresponds to the average of the department” in general and technology.
For staff, shortcomings do exist, but the situation is also on the way to “improving”. “They are still missing three teachers. This is linked to recruitment difficulties in certain disciplines,” he explains. A recurring phenomenon for several years for lack of candidate, especially in the 95. “It is obviously not satisfactory and the academy therefore continues to seek”, he underlines. In addition, a school nurse should take up her post on September 12.
The movement is renewed this Friday
Olivier Wambecke, who received the mobilized teachers this Thursday, nevertheless said he “regrets” the approach chosen by the latter to alert. “I don’t see how that helps the situation. They would have been received equally, he notes. In any case, everything is done to ensure that this establishment has stable timetables for students and teachers as soon as possible. »
At the end of their meeting with the academic management, the professors believe that they have not been heard and have decided to renew the movement this Friday.
