The Council of Presidents of the European Parliament has decided to close the hearing procedure for the candidate for the next European Commissioner from Bulgaria, the spokesperson of the institution announced.
Thus, the final vote of Iliana Ivanova for European Commissioner becomes part of the agenda of the plenary session next week in Strasbourg. The vote is expected to take place on September 12, BTA reported.
The decision comes after Ivanova was heard by two EP committees in Brussels a day ago. Then for nearly three hours she answered questions of all kinds, some of which had nothing to do with her future department – innovation, education, culture and youth. Ivanova answered in English, and only to the questions of Bulgarian MEPs was she answered in her native language.
The feedback after her presentation was excellent, her application was rated as “very strong” and she will no doubt be put to a vote at a meeting of the European Parliament next week.
Ivanova should become European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth by the end of the EC mandate next fall. She takes over from Maria Gabriel, who returned to Bulgaria and became Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in the GERB and PP-DB supported cabinet.
