Jose Mourinho Angry about Lost Europa League Final with AS Roma against Sevilla: Referee Controversy and Suspension

Jose Mourinho is still angry about the lost Europa League final with AS Roma against Sevilla. The Portuguese coach saw his team lose to the Spaniards in the final at the end of May via penalties.

“Winning the Europa League with Manchester United was a normal feeling for me,” Mourinho said on Wednesday Sky Italia when asked about some important games in his career. “Roma-Seville… if I say how I feel about it, I will be suspended for ten games.”

In 2017, Mourinho led Manchester United to the Europa League by beating Ajax 2-0 in the final. Six years later, the sixty-year-old coach with AS Roma missed out on the overall victory in Europe’s second club tournament, which he believes was due to referee Anthony Taylor.

Mourinho thought that Sevilla should not have taken the decisive penalty again. According to him, AS Roma also deserved a penalty after an alleged handball from the Spaniards.

After the final, Mourinho raged against Taylor in the parking garage of the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. “You are a disgrace,” he shouted, among other things. The Portuguese was suspended for four European matches for assaulting the English referee.

Mourinho also counts Roma-Feyenoord among his most important duels

A year earlier, Mourinho won the Conference League with AS Roma by beating Feyenoord 1-0 in the final. He also counts that duel as one of the most important matches in his career.

“Roma-Feyenoord, but I could also have mentioned the game against Leicester,” said Mourinho. “I have never cried on the pitch after a defeat. But sometimes I cry after a win and these two games are historic for Roma.”

With the game against Leicester City, Mourinho is referring to AS Roma’s won semi-final against the English club in the 2021/2022 Conference League. The Romans won the return 1-0, after the first leg had ended 1-1.
