New York Fashion Week is starting the new season with an ever-increasing focus on sustainability. Fashion week will be opened on Thursday by Mayor Eric Adams at his official residence, the Gracie Mansion.

A total of 71 shows and presentations are on the official program of New York Fashion Week, which is organized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
“We’re having one show an hour this season,” says CFDA CEO Steven Kolb, referring to the vibrancy of the season.
Numerous other brands showcase their collections in showrooms, art galleries and even Airbnb apartments across the city.
“NYFW’s impact on the industry is significant. It is one of the most watched events, attracting thousands of people and generating over $900 million annually. It also brings in over $10 million in wages and approximately $2 billion in tax revenue “Kolb emphasizes.
The six-day season also features the return of Ralph Lauren, Phillip Lim and Helmut Lang – whose first Peter Do collection is billed as NYFW’s big debut. Demand for invitations will also be high at Coach, where Stuart Vevers is celebrating his 10th anniversary at the helm of the American giant. On Wednesday night, Victoria’s Secret will – in a surprise comeback – host its first major live event.
While the season used to be essentially limited to the island of Manhattan, it now extends across the entire city. For example, Ralph Lauren will host a show and dinner at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. NYFW first-timers include Advisry, Chan Chit Lo, FFORME, Grace Ling and Sho Konishi. At this year’s 16th edition of the Supima Design Competition for young designers, the competition will be particularly fierce. The final of the competition will take place at the Prince George Ballroom in the city center on Thursday and will be streamed live on Instagram.
With so many events taking place, the CFDA has called on everyone involved – fashion brands, production companies, event planners, PR agencies and others – to approach the week with more environmental awareness.

“We have encouraged them to recycle and reduce waste, reuse materials and save energy wherever possible so that we can move towards a more sustainable fashion week,” explains the CFDA director.
In partnership with the Boston Consulting Group, the CFDA has published a comprehensive overview and report of NYFW’s environmental impact and a Playbook for Positive Change.
In February, several major European brands – such as Marni and Isabel Marant >>>- presented themselves in New York. This month, CIFF (Copenhagen International Fashion Fair) x Revolver, Scandinavia’s largest fashion fair, comes to New York in partnership with the CFDA.
“We bring together 10 Danish and six US brands that are committed to sustainability and promoting responsible trade and growth,” emphasizes Kolb.
The American brands curated by the CFDA are M. Patmos, Charles Harbison, Melissa Joy Manning, Julia Jentzsch, Jahnkoy and Hope For Flowers.
The CFDA has also partnered with Spotify to create an official NYFW playlist and will install NYFW billboards in Times Square. However, industry insiders will first gather at the Gracie Mansion, where Eric Adams, the “Hizzoner” as New Yorkers call him, will welcome the industry along with CFDA President Thom Browne as co-host.
“There will be a mix of emerging and established designers, all inspired by the culture and energy of New York City. The city is the ultimate constant inspiration,” says Kolb.
In addition, the current finalists of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund will be presented in September. Next year the program will celebrate its 20th anniversary and judging by previous participants such as Altuzarra, Collina Strada, Proenza Schouler and Alejandra Alonso Rojas it was a great success.
The 2023 finalists are Colin LoCascio, Everard Best and Téla D’Amore from Who Decides War, Kozaburo Akasaka, Melitta Baumeister, Kim Shui, Tanner Fletcher founders Fletcher Kasell and Tanner Richie, Henry Zankov, Angelo Fabricio Urrutía from 4S Design, Sami Miró Vintage and Rachel Scott from Diotima.
