Vietnam and Malaysia achieved positive results in the first match of the round 2023 U-23 Asian Cup QualificationWednesday (6/9).
Vietnam, who compete in group C, started their campaign in the group phase with a 6-0 win over Guam at the Viet Tri Stadium.
Vietnam was only able to win 1-0 over Guam through a goal scored by Van Do Le in the 33rd minute.
Golden Star Warriors played more fiercely in the second half and were able to score against Guam five times. Five goals were scored alternately by Nguyen Van Tung (penalty 55), Ho Van Cuong (68), Nguyen Thanh Nhan (80), Nguyen Van Toan (84), and Bui Vi Hao (90).
This victory with a convincing score put Vietnam at the top of Group C. Vietnam outperformed Yemen because they had a better goal difference even though they both collected three points.
Malaysia, who are in Group H, were forced to fight hard to secure victory when they met Bangladesh at the Chonburi Stadium, Thailand. The Young Tigers were only able to score near the end of the match to secure the first three points.
Malaysia broke the deadlock when the match entered the 82nd minute. The goal that made the score change to 1-0 was scored by Aliff Izwan.
Malaysia’s advantage can be emphasized in the second half injury time. This time the goal was scored by Fergus Tierney which made the final score change to 2-0.
These results put Malaysia at the top of Group H standings with a collection of three points.
Two other Southeast Asian representatives, namely Myanmar and Singapore, achieved different results. Myanmar drew 1-1 against Kyrgyzstan and Singapore lost 0-3 to Yemen.
