The passion of fools produces great social dramas. Adrian and Constanța, a couple from Buzoi who ended up on the roads because of this vice, felt it on their skin. The man has lost almost 100,000 lei in recent years, money due after the division of an inheritance.
Adrian Crăciun considers himself a victim of drug addiction and says that he ended up on the roads because of this dangerous vice. More than 12 years ago, says the 52-year-old man, he suddenly fell into the passion of gambling, tempted by the mirage of a huge win overnight. Then poverty fell upon his family.
“This is an illness and it’s hard for me to recover from it. Now I go into the arcades less often, but because I have no more money, not for anything else. I sometimes feel the need to go in just for a beer or a coffee. Three months ago, I couldn’t help myself and lost 16 million old lei at the grocery store,” admits Adrian.
His wife, Constanța, was powerless to pull Adrian out of the addiction that would ruin their lives, little by little. In the beginning, the now 46-year-old woman worked abroad, in a bar and as a cleaner, and sent money home with the intention of collecting it and then using it to consolidate the dilapidated house she owns near Buzău.
“I don’t have children, but for those who have and lose money at the grocery store, it’s very hard to see that you won’t be able to give them food the next day, so that your husband puts all the money at the grocery store,” says Constanța.

The serious thing is that the machines in the casinos ate Adrian all the money received after an inheritance. After the death of his parents, he and his brothers sold an apartment, then a studio, from both properties, returning to Adrian about 100,000 lei. In the following years, all the money ended up in the accounts of betting and gambling rooms, where the man spent whole nights.
“You don’t know yourself anymore, you don’t know if it’s day or night…”
Adrian became a different person when he approached a game room. He succumbed to the temptation without any remorse and ended up spending many hours in the obscure universe of casinos. The most he won was around 4,000 lei, and this kind of deceptive performance gave him the impression that the big prize was finally coming.
“You always have this expectation that the win is coming that will change your life. But it’s a trick. When they catch you at their place, in the gaming rooms, it’s as if they somehow manage to cast a spell on you, with a whiskey, a coffee, a beer, after which you don’t know yourself anymore, you don’t know what time it is, if it’s day, if it’s night. I have the impression that I also put something in the alcohol”, says Adrian.

Adrian Crăciun and his wife spend more time on the streets, in the parks, because their house has become uninhabitable. The man’s vice threw them both into poverty, and they had no choice but to imagine, with tears in their eyes, what fate they would have had if they had not wasted the money.
“We lost a lot of everything, a fortune, and that’s why we’re on the streets. Now we sit around the park, because in the house we have in Smeeni we cannot stay, we have no electricity, nothing. We have no conditions at all because my husband lost everything at the machines. In the city, I still help some women with housework, my husband also spends the day in construction,” confesses Constanța, 46 years old.

In recent years, Romania has become fertile ground for patrons in the gambling industry. In many localities, there are more gambling establishments than pharmacies or dispensaries. In our country, there are more than 10,000 sports betting agencies and more than 70,000 machines, known as bookmakers.
The phenomenon seems to bother the governors, more recently. On the table of parliamentarians is a legislative project aimed at eliminating gambling halls in the middle of towns, so that there are no more temptations for those who are weak in the face of temptations.
