Mass Fraud at the Mexico City Marathon: Over 35% of ‘Finishers’ Did Not Complete the Race

About 35% of runners identified as ‘finishers’ did not complete the entire route

Disputed at altitude, above 2,200 metres, the Mexico City Marathon was already distinguished from the others by its special characteristics, but now it is news around the world due to the fact that this year it was the scene of a real mass fraud. All because, of the approximately 33,000 runners who were given as ‘finishers’, more than 11,000 did not complete the entire 42,195 kilometer route. All in all, around 35% of the people listed as finalists (and who took home the medal) did not complete the race, something that the organization detected in the analysis of the chip data, which show numerous cases of runners who did not pass in great part of the checkpoints.

Some started in the middle, others a few meters from the finish line and just went to get the medal, others cut the way at one of the several points where the race made returns. The situation was so blatant that Facebook pages were even created to denounce these cases, as many of those who cheated decided to boast about their achievements on social networks. There was even a case of a runner showing off the medal and a race time that would be a stunning world record: 1:19 hours, more than 42 minutes faster than Eliud Kipchoge’s mark. Naturally… there was cheating.
