Jelena Ostapenko loses at the US Open at noon against US star Coco Gauff. The Latvian then grumbles about the starting time.

Tennis player Jelena Ostapenko has criticized the organizers of the US Open for scheduling her quarterfinals against American crowd favorite Coco Gauff.

“When I saw the schedule, I was a bit surprised and not in a good way,” said the 29-year-old Latvian after the 6-0, 6-2. “When I saw that I was playing the first match, I said: Wow, that’s a strange start.”

understanding of Gauff

Ostapenko had surprisingly defeated the defending champion Iga Swiatek from Poland in three sets in the round of 16, the game ended shortly before midnight on late Sunday evening. The duel with Gauff began a day and a half later at 12 p.m. (local time) in the midday heat of New York.

“The schedule was better for her because she played much earlier in the day than I did in the night session,” Ostapenko complained. Immediately after her round of 16, she was initially told that she should play against Gauff again late in the evening.

Grand Slam tournaments are tough, said Gauff and expressed understanding for her opponent. Fixtures would definitely play a role, especially mentally.
