The Ballon d’Or is an individual award given by vote to the player who has had the best season. The trophy was created in 1956 by the magazine France Football. Until 2006, the reward was reserved for a player playing in a European championship. In 2007, the trophy was opened without distinction of championship or nationality. The record holder is Lionel Messi, winner seven times, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, winner five times.
