NEW DELHI – The leaders of the world’s richest and most powerful countries will attend G20 Summit which takes place over two days in the capital of India, New Delhi, starting September 9, 2023.

This is the first time India has hosted such a powerful group of world leaders. The capital has been decked out with flowers and fountains at traffic circles, while public buildings and sidewalks have been given a fresh coat of paint.

Security is provided by an anti-drone system, and the deployment of 130,000 police and paramilitary personnel.

Here are 5 facts about the G20 Summit in India.

1. The Power of 80% of Global GDP

Twenty of the world’s major nations formed an economic group after the Asian financial crisis in 1999 with the understanding that the crisis could no longer be overcome within national borders and required greater international economic cooperation.

The block currently accounts for 80% of global gross domestic production (GDP) and 75% of international trade.

Its members include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union.

Although only the chiefs of finance met in the early years, the heads of member countries decided to meet once a year in a leaders’ summit following the 2008 financial crisis.
