Ewout flies to America to find out everything about the largest body farm in the world in Texas. There are hundreds of people every year who donate their bodies to science. Part of it ends up on such a body farm.
Ewout is given a tour of the site. This tour impresses the presenter. “This is very intense to see. I also get sick of what I see and smell.” He sees dozens of bodies lying next to each other in the blazing sun, an important part of the investigation that takes place there.
One body is in a better condition than the other body. “You can see that on the one hand people have just been laid down, there are at most some flies. But on the other hand, the bodies have almost completely decayed due to all the maggots.”
He talks to Tim, one of the directors of the body farm. He explains that some people have a wish to end up on the field after they die. “A 39-year-old woman, for example, would die of cancer. Despite her young death, she still wanted to be significant. That is possible in this way.”
Tim talks about his most intense memory of his work. “The first time someone younger than me came in made a big impact.” He draws important life lessons from his work. “That boy had cancer and did not go to the hospital despite signs of it. I now often have myself checked by the doctor to stay healthy.”
One thing Tim knows for sure, he also wants to end up on the body farm after his death. “By staying as healthy as possible, I hope this won’t be in the foreseeable future.”
