As 35,000 students return to Cote d’Azur University, dozens or even a hundred students are still without housing solutions in the department, according to the student federation La Face 06.
A tense situation in the academy at the start of the 2023 school year. “We no longer have a single place”, observes Mireille Baral, director of Crous Nice-Toulon*.* The Crous has 3,300 places in rooms and studios in the Alpes-Maritimes, primarily for scholarship students.
“One place for five requests in Nice”
But the demand is very strong. “We have on average five requests for an available place in the city of Nice.” Knowing that the students continue their cycle, they stay between 3 and 5 years maximum, consequently, the number of places possible to attribute to each return is not equal to the total number of 3,000 places.
Some students drop out of their course, or change direction during the year, “we call it the flow of water”explains Mireille Baral. “We advise students who have not been able to find a place at the start of the look on the website findunlogement.lescrous.fr to position yourself on the accommodation that becomes available.” The Crous Nice-Toulon is exceptionally opening a Jean Médecin residence which was in rehabilitation, with a hundred places. “You really have to watch the website to try to find accommodation, but it will go very, very quickly”.
320 studios in Saint Jean d’Angély in 2026-2027
In Nice, demand is strong, but for what reasons? There are more and more students, some of them are also “decohabiting”, that is to say they decide not to stay with their parents anymore, and Nice also attracts international students.
New construction solutions are therefore planned with the city and the department. “We have plans for new residences here with 320 studios at Campus Saint Jean d’Angély in Nice, as part of the future Sant campus, which should grow by 2026-2027, 75 others at Campus Trotabas of law and other projects in the Carlone campus area as well.” Beyond the Crous offer, there are also private residences for students whose families have more means.
“On the start of the school year, there are students who are always looking”
When a young person cannot find accommodation, in an emergency, the Crous look for alternatives to help himthis is the case for certain in this new school year. “It’s very painful when it happens, explains Mireille Baral. We receive them, we give them the list of hostels for young workers, youth hostels, associations that offer intergenerational accommodation (between an elderly person and students), we also have partnerships with hotels temporarily.
The Crous also offers emergency financial aid to help pay rent, and “Above all the State offers the Visale Caution, set up by Action Logement, which avoids having to pay a deposit, which is still very important.”
