Filippo Ganna’s Victorious Tricolor Symphony in the Streets of Valladolid: 2023 Vuelta de España Recap

A tricolor symphony on the streets of Valladolid. In the individual time trial that opens the second week of the 2023 Vuelta of Spain, Filippo Ganna darts by in the Italian champion’s jersey and proves to be unattainable for the thick competition, bringing our country back to stage success in this race after two years (Damiano Caruso, Alto de Velefique). The Verbanese takes a small, sweet revenge on Remco Evenepoel, who at the beginning of August had denied him the third world championship gold in this specialty in Glasgow. However, the Belgian finishes second and gains precious time on all his rivals in the general classification, even if Primoz Roglic defends himself well (third) and gives him just 20 seconds. Good performances for Joao Almeida and Aleksander Vlasov, while Jonas Vingegaard is not brilliant. Among the big names are Enric Mas, Mikel Landa and Lenny Martinez. Sepp Kuss finishes 13th and saves the red jersey for 26 seconds on Marc Soler. Positive performance by Mattia Cattaneo, sixth.

The record

After the first day of rest, the Vuelta 2023 restarts with the only individual time trial of this edition. A test that presents itself as “Evenepoel against all”, with Filippo Ganna observed special for the stage victory. Callum Scotson (Jayco AlUla) is bottom of the standings after nine legs and kicks off at 2.01pm. The first rider to keep an eye on, though, is Stefan Bissegger. The Swiss of EF Education-EasyPost is simply in another category than his rivals on the road at this stage and closes his test with a significant 28’58”50 over the 25.8km race.

The first to approach the leader are Nico Denz (BORA – hansgrohe) and Julius Johansen (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty), who climb onto the provisional podium just as Filippo Ganna’s race begins. The Italian champion starts off with excellent energy and goes back in an amen to Alan Jousseaume, who started a minute before him. At the first intermediate stage (after 12.5 kilometres), his advantage over Bissegger is already important: 33 seconds. Pippo continues to overtake riders (there will be four in all!), passes with a margin of 52 seconds at the second detection and continues to push. The standard bearer of INEOS Grenadiers finishes his test like a rocket, signing a resounding 27’39”51: 1’19” better than Bissegger, 56 km/h on average for SuperPippo.

A long phase begins in which no one even comes close to Ganna’s time trial. Matteo Sobrero is in fourth position (+1’44”), just ahead of Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Emirates). Shortly after, the Spanish champion Jonathan Castroviejo (+1’24”) and Nelson Oliveira of Movistar (+1’12”) did better, ousting Bissegger from second place. It’s Geraint Thomas’s turn too, but the Welshman continues his no-time in the Vuelta by puncturing in the first part of the race and immediately pulling himself out of contention. Mattia Cattaneo shows off a level performance, second in both intermediates and also at the finish line, 1’09” behind Ganna. We are at the point of the time trial, all the big names in the general start, with the first ten in this order: Almeida, Ayuso, Mas, Vingegaard, Roglic, Landa, Evenepoel, Martinez, Soler and Kuss.
