United States of America advanced to the semifinals FIBA World Cup 2023 after thrashing Italy 100-63 in the quarter-finals. They catch up Serbia which previously toppled Lithuania 87-68.
Compete at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay, Tuesday (5/9), Italy, reinforced by Utah Jazz star, Simone Fontecchio, failed to repeat their brilliant performance like when they silenced Serbia in the second round. The accuracy of their shots is so chaotic.
This can be seen from the three point shot. Only seven of the 38 trials that entered, even though that is Italy’s mainstay weapon. As a result, they were immediately battered from the start. Italy trailed 14-24 in the first quarter then 24-46 in the second.
The US went crazy in the third quarter, scoring 37 points to 20. Italy led 19-17 in the final quarter, but the difference in points was too far. The US advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 100-63 victory.
11 of the 12 US players scored points, with Mikal Bridges the highest. He scored 24 points, followed by Tyrese Haliburton with 18 points. Austin Reaves posted 12 points, and the rest are in under double figures.
Meanwhile in the Italian camp, Fontecchio scored 18 points and Stefano Tonut scored 11 points. The rest did not penetrate double digits. In the semifinals, the US will face the winner Germany vs Latvia which was just held on Wednesday (6/9).
Previously at the same place, Serbia silenced Lithuania, which was unbeaten in the group stage and round two. Lithuania led 25-24 in the first quarter, but Serbia came back in the next quarter to go up 49-38, 73-55 and win 87-68.
Atlanta Hawks star Bogdan Bogdanovic became a Serbian star with a contribution of 21 points. Next they will meet the winner of Canada vs Slovenia which also just played on Wednesday (8/9).
