The European transfer window closed last Friday. While FC Bayern almost embarrassed themselves with two failed last-minute deals, Eintracht Frankfurt set a new record fee for Randal Kolo Muani.
But anyone who suspected that the transfer summer is now cooling off is wrong. After all, the transfer window in financially strong Saudi Arabia is still open. In the desert state, the phase for acquiring new players – top stars like Mo Salah are still being traded – is not scheduled to end until September 20th. But now a surprising turn of events is causing a hectic rush.
The Saudi Arabian Football Association announced on Monday in a joint statement with the professional league that clubs in the Middle East only have until September 7th to recruit new players. Thus, the transfer window closes almost two weeks earlier than previously assumed.
Liverpool FC had rejected Al-Ittihad’s latest offer for Salah of around 175 million euros. The squad is already packed with stars like top striker Karim Benzema, Fabinho and N’Golo Kanté.
Al-Nassr, the club where Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mané also play, had asked Munich whether a transfer of the French central defender would be possible. However, the German record champions also remained firm and rejected the offer.
Another Bayern player that Hau thinks is more likely to make the move is Eric-Maxim Choupo-Mouting. It could be financially worthwhile for the 34-year-old to accept a multi-year contract in the Persian Gulf, his contract with Bayern expires next year.
By Thursday it will be seen whether the crazy transfer volume of the summer will get the last push again.
