The Connection Between the Book and Album ‘Safety Festival’ with Harmonious Transformations and Collaborations

The lines of the pedestrian crossing depicted on the cover of the book harmoniously transform into piano keys on the pages and symbolize the book’s close connection with the album “Safety Festival” released this year.

“The poems were originally created as lyrics, but we felt that the material was too large for one album, so we approached the publishing house “Latvijas Mediji.” The representatives of the publishing house express their joy for the cooperation with Arturas Gruzdiņas and Agnes Rudzītis, because “the created book and notebook perfectly complement each other, providing parents and children with very relevant materials with situations to discuss, act out and even sing together.”

The illustrations for both the book of poems and the coloring activity book were created by Liepāja artist Agnese Rudzīte together with her daughter Terēza Marija Miltina.

“She was very similar to me with the vision of young people and, for example, she drew fierce dogs, because she was not afraid of mine.”

Work on the illustrations of the book took about a year. “In the beginning, a large bunch of ideas was drawn up. I work by hand, not digital. Pencil, rapidograph, light table, felt-tip pens,” Agnes reveals the creative process.

The artist thanks the publishing house for their trust: “This is a process that must not be delayed. You should always know how much 2×2 is and where the latest version of the zebra is. It is exciting work and a wonderful result.”

The designer Madara Pilipa-Matisone also made a significant contribution to the overall image of the book, who gave the book the rockiness characteristic of the album’s songs.

The book and activity book is intended for children of preschool and younger school age and their families. The poems collected in it talk about the kind of dangers that can most often be avoided by being careful or knowledgeable – the poems include both common safety topics, but also, for example, topics about thin ice, strangers, dogs and parents who use the phone while driving. Someone may remember the sharp dog’s teeth in the illustration, while others will remember the catchy chorus in the song.

“The main thing is that the advice finds the shortest path at the right moment, because we talk about safety because we care what happens to the other person. And that’s probably the most important thing.”

The book can be found in the online store of the “Latvijas Mediji” publishing house, as well as in all major bookstores in Latvia.
