“What we are seeing this year is a very significant increase in the number of people we welcome. To date, compared to last year, we are at +37%, ”explains in the video the deputy manager of a distribution center for Restos du Coeur in the 11th arrondissement of Paris.
The association founded by Coluche in 1985 has announced that it is in financial difficulty. This situation is explained by an increase in the number of people requesting food aid, as well as an increase in operating costs linked to inflation. “There is a shear effect for restaurants,” notes the manager.
In this Parisian distribution center, the structure, planned to receive 1,400 people per week, now accommodates 3,500. “It’s very dense, you don’t stop once it starts. You have to constantly recharge. […] So we spend our time sitting, standing, reloading and undoing boxes, ”says a volunteer.
The Restos du Coeur need 35 million euros to end the financial year in balance. In this context, the State has promised aid of 15 million. Companies or wealthy people have also announced that they would make donations, including Crédit Mutuel, Fnac or even the family of Bernard Arnault (owner of “Echos”) – who announced that they would pay 10 million euros.
