Some 13 people were detained as a result of the clashes in Sweden’s third largest city.

After a new burning of a copy of the Koran, last Sunday, clashes broke out in the third largest city of Sweden, Malmö, which lasted all night and were qualified by the Swedish Police of “violent riots“.

The riots broke out after an anti-Islamic activist burned a copy of the Muslim holy book. At first, concentrated people who were against the burning of the Koran threw stones over some fences that cordoned off the area and then others tried to climb over the barriers to the anti-Islam activist, but were stopped.

This was followed by a series of violent acts against the police officers guarding the site. The situation worsened at night, when those protesting against the burning of the Koran began to fire cars on the streets and burning garbage cans.

As a result, the police arrested some ten people for disturbing public order and at least three for participating in violent disturbances. In addition, it was announced that the Swedish law enforcement authorities have opened an investigation against the participants in the clashes.

“We have some good photographic images of today’s events and will do our best to prosecute those who were involved in the violence” said Petra Stenkula, head of the Police in Malmö.

In recent months, anti-Islam activists from Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands have burned several copies of the Qur’an, sparking discontent and massive protests in countries including Iraq, Lebanon and Iran. Sweden raised on August 17 the terrorist threat at the second highest possible levelamid the “worsening situation regarding the threat of attacks” against the country, following a series of Koran burnings that have caused outrage in the Muslim world.
