Discover the Delights of Fig Day at the Luberon Regional Natural Park (PNR) on September 17!

The organization of theme days is part of the DNA of the Luberon regional natural park (PNR), which is organizing a day devoted to figs from the South on September 17 at the Conservatory of Ancient Varieties.

3,340 tonnes of fruit produced in France

There are two types of fig trees. The uniferous varieties bear fruit once a year, from August to October; while the biferous varieties produce twice a year in June-July (the “fig-flowers”) then in September-October (the “autumn figs”). Each year, 3,340 tonnes of figs are harvested in France.

They are called black from Caromb, Marseille or gray from Saint-Jean; they are green, purple, black or two-tone…: there are nearly 750 varieties, 300 of which are grown in France. Among the most commercialized, the long black of Caromb, an old variety of which about thirty tons are produced annually at the foot of Mont Ventoux, in the Vaucluse. The other must-have is the famous black bourjassotte, known as the fig of Solliès. Between Toulon and Hyères in the Var, the Solliès basin is the leading French harvesting area, thanks to some of the highest sunshine and temperatures in France. This fruit, labeled AOC and AOP, has undeniable taste qualities. Its aromas are generous and intense.

Thirty varieties grown in Manosque

A change has been developing in recent years: trees tend to age prematurely due to drought. The descent of the sap is later – or not at all – which reduces the pruning period. However, to develop, the fig tree needs water and when the drought is persistent, the tree resists but tends to discharge its figs. On September 17, the gardeners of the Conservatoire de la Thomassine offer a succulent walk in the orchards to discover the varieties of fig trees. They will be happy to reveal all the secrets of these fruit trees rooted in Mediterranean culture and the local territory. About thirty varieties are grown in Manosque and each has its particularity.

In practice: two visits will take place at 10.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. A picnic area is available under the lime trees. It is possible to buy fruit and olive oil on site. More information on 06 86 49 18 81.
