Current Heat Wave in France: Alps Escape Vigilance While Rest of Country Remains Alert

A heat wave is currently affecting part of France. The Alps are currently escaping heat wave vigilance, although temperatures are above normal for the seasons, especially in the mountains where the isotherm is around 5,000 meters above sea level.

Due to a new heat wave, Météo France placed part of western France on Monday, September 4, on heatwave yellow vigilance. A vigilance that can “be gradually extended to other departments, on the next maps depending on the evolution of the episode of high heat”indicates the report of Météo France.

We We are currently stuck in an anticyclone, between two disturbances, one coming from Portugal and the other from Greece. Fairly warm temperatures are linked to these disturbances“, adds Guilhem Mollard, Meteo France forecaster in Grenoble.

After an episode of heat wave in mid-August, then a drop in temperatures last week, the Alps escape vigilance for the moment, although temperatures are above normal for the season. “In the region, we are a little bit at the limit of temperatures which justify yellow vigilance. […] However, for the season, we are on remarkable values. On some stations, we are close to records“.

According to Météo France, temperatures are particularly high in the mountains: “It is really hot at altitude, in the middle and high mountains. The 0° isotherm is around 5,000 meters. For early September, it’s a record“, explains Guilhem Mollard.

A monthly record has already been broken at the Aiguille du Midi on Monday morning, with a minimum of 5.3°C. “The last record was 2.7°C in 2018. We are way above“.

With temperatures around 35°C in North Isère, should we expect a new episode of heat wave? “Heatwave is a big word, but it’s a lasting heat episode at least until Saturday“, answers Guilhem Mollard. In September, the nights are longer and thus allow the temperatures to go down again. “But it’s still very sweet. In Grenoble, we have nights around 17°C“.

According to the forecaster, this kind of heat episode in September is not exceptional: “Strong heat in September, it has already existedexplains Guilhem Mollard, however, it has become more and more frequent in recent years, due to climate change“.

The end of this heat wave is not defined, high temperatures could continue next week and heat wave vigilance will increase.
