Why McDonald’s Prices Vary in the Netherlands: Exploring Regional and Competition Factors

The prices between the various McDonald’s locations in the Netherlands have differed for years. “When I used to be at secondary school in Boskoop, I regularly went to McDonald’s at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht,” says Mark van der Molen, of YouTube channel De Gezouten Mening.

“Occasionally you received those coupons or vouchers that were valid for all kinds of products, with the exception of certain locations. Places such as Damrak, Schiphol and Jaarbeurs in Utrecht were often among the more expensive McDonald’s locations.”

Organized very efficiently

According to Dirk Mulder, retail specialist at ING, the Dutch hospitality industry is known for its higher prices. “It has to do with different cost structures,” says Mulder. “On the one hand, we are very efficiently organized within the chain: the production and distribution processes run very well. On the other hand, we have higher salaries compared to other countries.”

The high cost prices in the Netherlands translate into a higher price for a Dutch Big Mac menu.

It is not the purchasing costs, which are comparable for all McDonald’s branches, says Mulder. “The purchasing costs in Deventer are comparable to those in Amsterdam. The main cause of high costs is the rent of the building and the staff.”

Randstad vs. province

According to the specialist, the price that the consumer pays is mainly determined by two aspects: the degree of competition and the location. “In Amsterdam, for example, the prices are higher because the costs are also significantly higher there.”

These factors explain the regional price differences, but also why it is sometimes more or less expensive for a burger menu in the same city. “Rent and salary costs are higher in the center of the city.”

Finally, branches in the Randstad are more often faced with rapid changes in personnel, says Mulder. “In rural areas, this effect is considerably less noticeable.”
