Belgian justice minister Vincent Van Quickenborne is under fire because guests urinated on a police car at his birthday party. Images of the incident give the impression that the minister was aware of the misconduct, while he previously denied it.
Three weeks ago, visitors to Van Quickenborne’s birthday party urinated several times against a police car parked at his house. The police reacted indignantly. The minister, who is also responsible for the police, expressed his disapproval, but insisted that he had missed it.
New questions are now being raised about this VRT images of that evening in August. The peeing guests seem to have made laughing photos and videos of their actions with the empty and open police car, which they also sit in for a while.
A few hours later, the minister also comes out. On the sidewalk, he looks at his phone with a partygoer, laughing and pretending to pee. Then he walks to the police car and opens the door.
House Van Quickenborne extra guarded by police
Van Quickenborne maintains that he knew nothing. “Inferring from gestures that he was aware is interpretation,” says his department.
The Belgian public prosecutor says that the investigation has not yet been completed. The police unions are again demanding clarification. Trade unionist Carlo Medo speaks of “taking responsibility and drawing his own conclusions”.
The police have extra security at Van Quickenborne’s house since crime gangs have targeted him. That is why the liberal minister even had to go into hiding for some time.
