Spanish Government Seizes Court to Suspend President of Football Federation

The Spanish government has just seized the Administrative Court of Sport (TAS) to request the provisional suspension of the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, considering that he could harm the joint candidacy of Spain, Portugal and Morocco at the 2030 World Cup.

In his request to the CAS to which The country had access, the Spanish Executive asked the body to take action ex officio and temporarily suspend Rubiales, until the case of the forced kiss to the player Jenni Hermoso is resolved, arguing that the maintenance of the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in his position would further damage the image of Spain and its football at national and international level.

In this case, the government of Pedro Sanchez thinks that Rubiales could jeopardize his candidacy for the 2030 World Cup with Morocco and Portugal. In his letter to CAS, he also referred to Rubiales’ involvement in the threatening letter sent to UEFA which jeopardized the participation of Spanish teams and the national team in international competitions.

FIFA has already suspended Rubiales for 90 days. It is up to the members of the CAS to determine whether the actions of the president of the RFEF damaged the reputation of Spain. The CAS decision will be followed closely, and not only in Spain, because its president, Miguel Pajuelo, is the only one to have qualified Rubiales’ forced kiss as a “very serious” act. The five other members of the court will have to decide whether or not to suspend Rubiales as a precaution.
