Jakarta –
General Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) Yahya Cholil Staquf or Gus Yahya spoke up regarding the statement by the Minister of Religion (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas who appealed to citizens not to vote for a presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election which has a track record of dividing people. According to Gus Yahya, the Minister of Religion’s appeal was positive.
“I think it’s possible, yes for me it’s positive,” said Gus Yahya after meeting President Joko Widodo (Jokowi, at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, Monday (4/9/2023).
According to Gus Yahya, the appeal was given so that people would no longer be trapped in divisions.
“So that our society is no longer trapped in a situation that has the potential for division like that,” he said.
When asked whether PBNU had made a similar appeal to NU members, Gus Yahya assessed that so far things had been safe.
“So far, we have seen that the situation is still safe, we don’t know the developments later,” said Gus Yahya.
Previously, the Minister of Religion (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas appealed to the public to choose a presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Yaqut asked the public to check the track record of the presidential candidates.
“It must be checked properly. Have we ever seen our future leader, our presidential candidate, divide the ummah. If so, don’t be elected,” Yaqut said in a statement published by Kemenag.go.id, Monday (4/9).
Yaqut reminded the public not to elect a candidate for a leader who uses religion as a political tool to gain power. Yaqut said this at the 231st Thoriqoh Tijaniyah National Eid al-Khotmi Tabligh Akbar event at the Az-Zawiyah Islamic Boarding School, Tanjung Anom, Garut, West Java.
