UAE Chess Player Rawda Al Serkal Wins Gold in Asian Individual Chess Championship

DUBAI, 4th September, 2020 (WAM) — Rawda Al Serkal, the UAE chess player, won first place and the gold medal in the Asian Individual Chess Championship for Amateurs, which was organized by the UAE Chess Federation in cooperation with the Continental Federation and concluded its competitions on Sunday in Dubai.
The championship, which was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, was attended by 170 male and female players from 27 Asian countries, who competed in 4 classification categories, under classifications 1700 and 2000 for men and women.
3 female players from our national chess team succeeded in winning 3 medals in the tournament, including the gold medal for Rawda Al Serkal in the category under 2000 points, the silver medal for player Wafia Darwish Al Maamari in the same category, and the bronze medal for player Maryam Issa in the category under 1700 points.
The closing ceremony of the tournament was attended by the winners, Hisham Al-Taher, Secretary-General of the Asian Chess Federation, Abdul Karim Al-Marzouqi, Secretary-General of the UAE Chess Federation, Sultan Al-Taher, member of the Board of Directors, head of the technical staff, Saud Al-Ketbi, member of the Board of Directors, deputy head of the technical staff, and Kholoud Al-Zarouni, member of the Board of Directors and head of the women’s and media committees in the federation. .
Rawda Al Serkal was able to win first place in the category under 2000 points, with 8 points from 9 rounds, after she clinched the title before the end with a round. .
In the category under 1700 points, Sri Lankan Desandhi Dhansa won first place with 7 points, and Uzbek Mansourova came in second place with 6 points, equal with Maryam Issa, the UAE national team player, who won third place and the bronze medal.
At the men’s level under 2000 points, the Indian Kumaris won the first place with 8.5 points, and his compatriot Sham came in the second place with 7.5 points, and the Uzbek Ravel Perinkhan came in the third place.
In the category under 1700 points for boys, the Filipino German Santiago won the first place with 6.5 points, and the Sri Lankan Ovin Vidmal came second with 6 points, equal to the Indian Anshu Kr Pathak third.
Rawda Al-Serkal expressed her happiness at achieving this achievement, and considered that the gold medal in the Asian Championship is an extension of the series of distinguished results that she achieved throughout the recent tournaments.
She said, “Winning the last three championships I participated in, the most important of which was the Arab Games in Algeria, had a strong motivation to motivate me and give me confidence in my ability to win the Asian Championship for amateur singles.”
She added that her ambition extends in order to achieve more achievements, whether in the next world championship, exceeding the 2000-point classification, as well as participating in the “Grand Masters” tournaments in the world.
