Astronomers have long been puzzled by space objects that behave strangely and are largely unexplained in their outer reaches Solar systembeyond the orbit of Neptune.
Observations show that this trans-Neptunian object (TNO) moves as if it were pulled by the gravitational force of a large invisible mass. One theory is that there is a ninth and very large planet lurking there, dubbed Planet Nine, which might explain the strange behavior.
In recent research, it was suggested that the cause was not a large planet but a hidden planet no bigger than three times the mass of Earth, which could explain the movement of the TNO.
“We predict the existence of Earth-like planets and some trans-Neptunian objects in strange orbits in the outer solar system,” said Patryk Sofia Lykawka of Kindai University in Japan and Takashi Ito of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, in The Astronomical Journal.
As quoted detikINET from Futurism, this theoretical planet may also be much closer to us than Planet Nine, another mysterious theoretical planet.
“We believe that Earth-like planets located in distant and tilted orbits can explain the prominent TNO population with orbits outside the gravitational influence of Neptune, the population of objects with significant high tilt, and the presence of some extreme objects with odd orbits,” they wrote.
This planet could explain why some of these objects orbit the Sun at extreme angles. However, this research is still limited to theory.
“We must be patient and wait until we have more detailed knowledge of the orbital structure in the Kuiper Belt,” said the researchers, to confirm the theory.
