Currently, such environmentally friendly energy is mainly obtained in places where there are warm geothermal waters at a shallow depth. However, with the development of technology, it is possible to place such stations in other places as well. The principle is simple – the deeper the rocks are, the warmer they are, and it is possible to create a closed system through which the heat carrier – water – circulates.
Currently, 42 stations are already operating in Germany, mainly in the southern part, where the geological conditions are suitable, and about 100 more are under construction or planning.
Already last year, the German government provided funding for the study of the most suitable sites, and Scholz promised that by 2030 such energy production would be increased tenfold.
Meanwhile, experts indicated that geothermal energy could provide more than a quarter of the heat used for heating in Germany.
Research is also being conducted in the vicinity of Berlin, and the former Tegel Airport is mentioned as one of the prospective locations. However, project developers are cautious due to limited funding and insufficient support.
