Nessebar’s Potential Loss of World Heritage Site Status

Nessebar is threatened to lose its status as a World Heritage Site. It is possible at the upcoming session of the international organization in Saudi Arabia the ancient city to be included in the list of endangered sites.

The monitoring mission of UNESCO and ICOMOS are found a significant loss of historical authenticity and cultural significance, transmits NOVA.

What will be the status of Nessebar will be decided at the UNESCO session in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in a few days. There are major problems the construction of parking lots, buildings and alleys, which cover archaeological remains, but also the lack of planning and management of the ancient city.

The Ministry of Culture warns: There is a danger that Nessebar will drop out of UNESCO

The final step before it fell off the UNESCO list given object, it is defined as risky. The Old Town of Nessebar will most likely be declared as such. Before it is removed from the cultural heritage list, the organization will have to negotiate with the local authorities for its preservation.

“The question is to find a balance between storage and everyday life of people, and trade, and transport, and construction. We will enter this list, but the idea is that this period that will be given to us will be healing. To make these adjustments and to preserve this world value”, commented Ivaylo Liakhovich, association “Old Nessebar”.

For the first time, the problem was put on the agenda a decade ago. The International Council for Cultural Monuments and Landmarks identifies specific problems in Nessebar.

“These are large constructions of ports, of whole villages on ports, built, we have a 6-story building on the seafront that juts out over a thousand-year-old church and completely hides it. To all this, UNESCO says – this is madness, there is no way this thing can exist”, explained Krastyo Peev, chairman of the Nessebar Public Council.

In the Ministry of Culture know about the problem, giving specific recommendations. Including the removal of an entire restaurant.

“The season is over, this restaurant continued to operate in categorically breaking the law”explained Krastyo Peev.

For tourists, Old Nessebar has not lost its charm. For now.
