MSV Duisburg Struggles in 3rd Division, Torsten Ziegner Praises Performance Despite Defeat

After the 2-1 defeat at SSV Jahn Regensburg, MSV Duisburg continues to stagger through the 3rd division. Torsten Ziegner still saw a decent performance and didn’t feel any headwind.

300 supporters of MSV Duisburg made the more than 600-kilometer journey to East Bavaria, hoping to finally win their first win of the season in the 3rd division. But the loyal fans were once again disappointed. The zebras lost 2-1 to the second division relegated team and suffered their second league defeat this season.

“The defeat is not deserved because we had the game completely under control in the first 45 minutes. After falling behind, the team stuck to their game,” summarized Torsten Ziegner on “Magenta Sport”. Except for a 15-minute phase of pressure from the SSV, the coach saw an acceptable performance from his team even after the change of sides.

“After the changes we were almost mostly with them in the half. The 1:2 falls out of nowhere. It ended up being a wild game that you must never, ever lose.”

This time, too, the 45-year-old made some personnel changes. Ziegner made five substitutions compared to the Ulm game.

The still goalless offensive for the top newcomers Alexander Esswein and Pascal Köpke was once again disappointing, both of whom remained completely pale. “It annoys me because the experienced, seasoned players have had a situation like this 100 times. They didn’t work,” Ziegner said clearly.

Those responsible could be much happier with the performance of Santiago Castaneda. The young American formed the stable double six with Niclas Stierlin. The newcomer was only taken off the field earlier because he had already been booked.

“That was very good from both of them,” said Ziegner. He doesn’t feel any headwind yet. However, the certificate for the established players has shown that there are still a few talks to be had before the next third division game on September 16th against Verl. Nothing other than a win against East Westphalia is mandatory in two weeks.
