Civilian Deaths in Sudanese Capital Khartoum: Airstrikes and Shelling Leave 25 Dead

In the Sudanese capital Khartoum, at least 25 civilians have been killed in two days as a result of air strikes and shelling. Two children are among the victims.

On Saturday, an airstrike by the Sudanese army killed 20 people. Homes were hit by a new series of rocket attacks on Sunday. These attacks have already resulted in at least five fatalities.

The battle mainly takes place in and around the capital Khartoum and civilians are often affected.

Sudan’s regular army has been battling the RSF paramilitary group since April. The army has superiority in the air and tries to eliminate RSF fighters with airstrikes. At the beginning of July, an airstrike by the Sudanese army also killed 22 civilians in one go.

The conflict between the two armies has so far killed at least 5,000 people, according to the international data collective ACLED. The United Nations says that at least half of the 48 million Sudanese now need humanitarian aid as a result of the unrest in the country. According to the UN, 6 million people are “one step away from famine”.
