Tragic Night: Two Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in the Capital

Two serious accidents with dead pedestrians in the capital marked the night before Sunday. A child died in the center of Sofia, and an elderly pedestrian died near Bozhurishte on the outskirts of the capital.

The tragedy in the center

A drunk driver hit and killed a 15-year-old child in the center of Sofia on Saturday evening. The boy died on the spot.

The child was hit at the intersection of “Shishman” and “Gurko” streets, he was crossing on a pedestrian path. The incident happened around 9.17pm on Saturday.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene, but they only pronounced the child dead.

According to information from the Ministry of the Interior, the driver was drunk. The 37-year-old driver with the initials P.T. was tested for alcohol and drugs, which found more than 2 per thousand. The blood sample taken subsequently confirmed the same.

According to witnesses quoted by bTV, the car drove by at high speed. According to information from the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office, which gave a press conference on the case on Sunday afternoon, the car was moving at about 80 km/h through the busy intersection and did not leave any stopping distance.

The prosecutor’s office will charge the drunk driver with intentionally causing death.

“Urgent actions are being carried out, materials are being collected, which were reported today to the duty prosecutor from the SGP, who, after familiarizing themselves with them, considered that there was sufficient evidence to bring the driver of the passenger car as a defendant for a committed crime – causing of death after a deliberate violation of traffic rules. The qualification of the act from the subjective side is that it happened with a possible intention. This, as a qualification of the act, is justified by the circumstances that the driver of the motor vehicle drove the same in a way that which would inevitably lead to such dangerous consequences and the causing of death.” said Deputy City Prosecutor Ivo Iliev.

The driver was detained for 72 hours, and the state prosecution will seek permanent detention.

The director of SDVR Lyubomir Nikolov added that the driver was not alone in the car. “The driver of the car was accompanied by a woman and her child in the car. It’s not his, but her child.” he announced.

Nikolov explained that the 37-year-old did not try to escape.

He has several previous violations: “..registration in 2005, where there was a pre-trial proceeding for driving a car after consuming alcohol, and one misdemeanor for speeding in 2020, where he was fined BGN 100.” “We have several sanctions regarding the same driver for not following the road markings, but the same is not being conducted as an active contingent in the line of road safety and the systematic violation of these rules.” Nikolov specified.

He added that the drug tests were negative. The car that caused the tragedy was a Mercedes. It is not the property of the driver, nor of his passenger in the car.

“She says she didn’t try to stop him because she didn’t think he was behaving inappropriately or intoxicated. It was probably about 400-500 miles from when he got into the car to the accident meters, because he was last seen getting into the car from Slavyanska beseda, the director of the SDVR also told.

According to BGNES, the driver forced himself to cross the pedestrian crossing before the boy crossed.
