Jakarta –
The emergence of the Omicron B.2.86 subvariant or also known as the Pirola variant has shocked the world. The reason is that along with its transmission which is very fast, this variant is said to be able to make COVID-19 cases rise again.
However, until now testing is still being carried out to ascertain whether the pyrrole variant can pose the threat of a new wave of COVID-19. The Statens Serum Institute also emphasized that, to date, there is no evidence that this variant can cause more severe symptoms than other variants.
Warwick University virologist Professor Lawrence Young explained that recent research has shown that the pyrrole variant may be better able to evade the immune response, but this variant appears to be less infectious when compared to previous variants.

Here are the facts about the Pirola variant:
1. Has the most mutations compared to other Corona variants
The pyrrole variant is a highly mutated variant of the Omicron type corona virus, which appeared in 2021 and had caused a spike in cases and deaths from COVID-19.
The Pirola variant carries over 35 mutations. The number of mutations is estimated to be equivalent to the Omicron variant which has caused record cases of infection compared to previous Corona variants.
“When Omicron hit in the winter of 2021, there was a huge increase in cases of COVID-19 because it was so different from the Delta variant, and it evaded immunity from both natural infection and vaccination,” infectious disease specialist Dr. Scott Roberts said in a Yale Medicine newsletter quoted from New York PostSunday (3/9/2023).
“Such a high number of mutations is extraordinary. When we went from XBB.1.5 to EG.5, there were probably one or two mutations. But this massive shift, which we also saw from Delta to Omicron, is very worrying.” .
2. Symptoms Caused
A founder of a COVID-19 testing clinic in London, Gabriela Brewer, revealed that there are four important signs to watch out for as symptoms of Pirola:
High fever Cough Cold Loss of smell or taste
“Once you have identified these signs and want to be sure, you should do an antigen or PCR test,” said Brewer. Express.co.uk.
Adeem Azhar, clinical pharmacist and co-founder of Core Prescribing Solutions, explained that some of the typical symptoms of COVID-19 with the Pirola variant infection are similar to the original strain. These include coughing, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches and a change in the sense of smell.
