Carlos Alcaraz: The Challenges of Making the Right Choices

Sometimes Carlos Alcaraz makes the wrong choice. There we said it. (After he says it)

Before you say, of course he does, he’s a human being and we’re all fallible, wait. The Spaniard has so many weapons in his arsenal, so many plans in his head that sometimes he doesn’t make the right choices. It’s a bit like Roger Federer when he was young, or Denis Shapovalov still today; they have so many options that it’s hard to sift through them fast enough to choose the right one.

Alcaraz: “Sometimes it’s hard to find the right solution.”

The native of El Palmar near Murcia mentioned it in a press conference after his victory against Dan Evans:

“For me, you know, when I was younger it was sometimes difficult. But today, I think most of the time I make the right choice, but sometimes I have a hard time, you know, hitting the right shot”

This does not happen often and rarely proves to be costly. After all, this is a man who won the US Open last year at 19 and won Wimbledon this summer. A man who has been number 1 for a good part of the year. But it is true that he sometimes chooses the wrong option, a drop shot when he should hit hard, or vice versa, etc.

“I’ve always had that,” he told reporters at Flushing Meadows on Saturday. “When I was young, I was playing tournaments for under-12s, under-14s, and I was thinking about a lot of different things before I hit the nail on the head. The drop shot, the powerful forehand, going to the net, you know, several things and sometimes it was difficult to find the right solution.

Dan Evans: “He (Alcaraz) plays almost too many different shots”

Alcaraz easily beat Dan Evans in four sets on Saturday, a highly entertaining match with plenty of incredible rallies as the Spaniard’s court cover was highlighted on various occasions.

At times, Evans could only laugh at his speed on the court and his ability to strike, but the Briton also gave him problems, causing him to make mistakes. The No. 28 seed also spotted his opponent’s poor picks.

“His ball is so heavy,” Evans said. “I think it’s very difficult to get him a winner, and his variations, I didn’t know what was coming next. It puts you on the back foot and it’s hard to anticipate and see what’s next. So it’s difficult.”

“Obviously he pushes you back and then he can play the drop shot, hit hard if you’re a little bit too advanced. In fact, he plays almost too many different shots. He let me out of jail a few times playing the wrong move, which was good for me, but in another day, if he puts it all together, it’s hard to stop him now.

Carlos Alcaraz will play his next match against Matteo Arnaldi in the round of 16 of the US Open.
