Rise in Secondary Sales of Slightly Used Cars in Latvia: Insights from Moller Auto

The data of the car dealer “Moller Auto” show that the number of used cars sold or bought back by car owners, intended for second-hand sales at the company’s dealers in Latvia, this year from January to July, compared to the same period last year, increased by 51%. This year, Audi, Volkswagen and Škoda are among the brands of slightly used cars that have most often ended up in the company’s secondary sales. According to Izīda Gerkena, executive director of the “Moller Auto” group of companies in the Baltics, in general, more and more car owners are interested in handing over a slightly used car for secondary sale in dealerships.

“Moller Auto” states that between January and July 2023, the company purchased almost 1,500 slightly used cars for secondary sale. The majority, or 75%, of cars purchased from car owners are from people living in Latvia. The rest is made up of cars from Germany, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Belgium.

Izīda Gerkena, executive director of the “Moller Auto” group of companies in the Baltic states, states that the currently used car market is still experiencing growth. “In the auto industry, we are still in an atypical situation where the demand for slightly used vehicles is greater than the supply. Also, nowadays, car owners increasingly choose to continue driving the car instead of handing it over to the secondary market, because they are not sure about the possibilities of buying a new car. True, taking into account the high demand for slightly used cars, it is clear that a large number of drivers choose slightly used vehicles instead of new cars. In general, during the past years, the used car market has started to regain its prestige, and people are more and more aware that when they buy a used car from dealers, not in the parking lot or directly from the owner, they will receive a quality car with a transparent history of its use,” says I. Gerken.

In the first seven months of 2023, the most common car models that “Moller Auto” bought from car owners for second-hand sales are “Volkswagen Passat”, “Volkswagen Tiguan”, “Volkswagen Golf” and “Škoda Kodiaq”. SUVs are most often chosen by households with children, while for individual needs, for example, to go to work every day, people choose smaller and more economical cars like the Golf.

Izīda Gerkena continues: “Over the past years, we have noticed that more and more car owners are interested in handing over their slightly used vehicles for secondary sale at our dealerships. This is explained by the fact that the sales process is simple when the car is second-hand sold at dealerships. For example, if the car also needs some technical improvements, they will be carried out in “Moller Auto” certified services, ensuring a full technical inspection of the car. Also, the process of selling the car and preparing the documents will not be a concern of the previous owner.”

She adds that when receiving cars handed over for second-hand sales, Moller Auto service experts pay attention to three main aspects: the car’s mileage data, the history of repairs and the overall technical condition of the car. Before the car enters the second-hand market, it undergoes a technical inspection, in-depth examination of its compliance with 130 criteria. On the other hand, when carrying out repairs, new spare parts corresponding to the specific model are used for the cars.
