Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Symptoms, Causes, and Risks of High Cholesterol

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – High cholesterol indicates an excess of fatty substances flowing through the bloodstream, a condition that poses significant health risks, including heart disease and stroke.

While high cholesterol often doesn’t cause any obvious warning symptoms, certain red flags do appear after cholesterol builds up in your arteries.

What Is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)?

According to Times of IndiaSunday (3/9/2023), Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition in which cholesterol buildup contributes to the formation of arterial plaque.

This plaque is composed of a mixture of fatty substances, cholesterol, cell waste products, calcium and fibrin. When this plaque builds up, your blood vessels harden and narrow.

One of the prominent symptoms of PAD, often seen as an indicator of “firsts,” is usually showing up on your buttocks, as highlighted by the Cleveland Clinic.

The early sign of PAD is known as intermittent claudication, marked by an uncomfortable sensation. Intermittent claudication manifests as pain, cramping and discomfort, usually affecting your buttocks or legs. This sensation generally appears during physical activity and decreases when resting.

Other Symptoms of PAD

In addition to pain or discomfort in the buttocks and legs, PAD can also cause other symptoms such as burning or soreness in the feet and toes, especially at night when lying down.

You may also notice cold skin on your feet, skin discoloration, increased susceptibility to infection, and persistent sores on your toes and feet.
