High Number of Malaria Cases in East Kutai Regency Linked to Forest Conditions

TRIBUNKALTIM.CO, SANGATTA – The Health Office (Dinkes) of East Kutai Regency (Kutim) released active cases of malaria as of 25 August 2023 which reached 521 cases.

The Secretary of the Kutim Health Office, Muhammad Yusuf, confirmed that malaria cases are also caused because East Kutai still has native forest areas with lots of swamps.

Because according to him, mosquitoes really like dark and damp places like forests.

“I say that as long as our virgin forests are not managed properly, don’t expect malaria cases to be reduced,” he said, Sunday (3/9/2023).

He continued, malaria cases were dominated by people who left the original forest or people who cleared land.

He said, whoever enters the forest, it is certain that the majority of the souvenirs he will receive are malaria.

However, if the original forest in East Kutai, in particular, can be managed properly, in this case it is left in humid conditions, the potential for malaria mosquitoes to breed in the forest will be high.

“If (the forest) is fertile, the lagoons (lakes or swamps) are not utilized, there are lots of (mosquitoes),” he added.
