The Artist Who Almost Disappeared: Valery Leontiev’s Battle Against Soviet Authorities

The artist risked leaving the stage forever.

Valery Leontiev is known to several generations of viewers. Today, few people can imagine that he once had every chance of losing viewers. And all because of the terrible intrigues of the Soviet authorities.

The future famous singer from the first days on stage showed a bright personality. The young performer chose memorable images, which the regime of that time did not like very much. But most of all, the artistic directors and censors were irritated by the way the Soviet artist moved around the stage. They believed that flirting with the audience was simply unacceptable for a singer in the USSR. At some point, he was severely avenged.

At one of the performances, the novice singer was strictly forbidden to walk around in front of the audience. However, knowing his disobedient disposition, they first brought a platform to the stage, on which they told him to stand until the very end of his song. The platform was so tiny that there was nowhere to move on it. The future idol of millions had to put up with it.

Since then, decades have passed. The artist was not allowed to tour abroad, they were forbidden to perform in Moscow. It is not known how the fate of the favorite of the public would have developed if it were not for changes in the country. In the 90s, a new era began in the artist’s career, and his popularity has not subsided so far.
