Should Extra Excise Duties on Alcohol and Tobacco Fund Poverty Reduction?

Nobody is against poverty reduction, but should that money come from extra excise duties on alcohol and tobacco?

No, thinks a majority of the participants in the statement of the day. “That puts an even greater burden on poverty. Many people in poverty have an alcohol or nicotine addiction”, is the opinion of several people.

The government is allocating 2 billion euros to improve purchasing power and to help families at risk of falling into poverty. Part of the money for this comes from extra excise duties on alcohol and tobacco.

The world is upside down, say many participants in the Statement of the Day. “Let the high incomes pay something for the lowest incomes and abolish their own risk healthcare costs for them. That gives some air.”

Expensive livelihood

Someone else thinks that even more minimum wage earners will suffer from the already expensive cost of living. “Now people are also taking away the few pleasures.”

But one of the proponents is concerned there is a win-win situation. “People can get help to stop smoking or drinking. Alcohol is ‘normal’ while it is clear that it causes a lot of damage to health (and society). Health care will be taxed less if there is no more (or less) smoking and drinking and it makes a huge difference in the wallet. Good plan!”
