Government forms eight-member committee to study ‘one country, one election’ reform

Amit Shah, Ghulam Nabi, Adhir Ranjan…; An eight-member committee was formed to study the ‘one country, one election’ solution

New Delhi: The central government has announced an eight-member committee to study the ‘one country, one election’ reform. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary are also included in the committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, N.K. Singh, Subhash Kashyap, Harish Salve and Sanjay Kothari are the other members of the committee. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is in the committee as a special invitee. Union Legal Affairs Secretary Nitin Chandra is the secretary of the committee.

The committee is to study the holding of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together. The committee will also study the constitutional amendments in this regard. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi said that a decision will be taken after receiving the report of the eight-member committee.

The committee will also primarily examine the issues pointed out in the draft report issued by the commission in 2018. The Center will present the bill in a special session from September 18 to 22.

Ever since becoming the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has been pushing the concept of ‘one country, one election’. He had said in public forums that there could be a debate and a consensus could be reached regarding holding the elections together.

Till 1967, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held together in the country. Later this changed when President’s rule was introduced in some states. In the 1950s and 60s, when elections were held together, there were fewer states and populations.

Meanwhile, as per the current rules, elections will be held after the completion of the term of each Assembly and Lok Sabha. But the opposition alleges that if the bill becomes a reality, it will overthrow the existing legislatures.
