Hyundai i30 Fastback 1.4 T-GDI Style: A Review of the Car and its Performance

Description of the car

I would like to introduce you to the Hyundai i30 Fastback 1.4 T-GDI Style, which I currently bought a month ago as a second car for the family instead of a Citroen C3 1.2VTI.

It had already aged significantly in 2014, even though it was technically in very good condition, after all it was already outdated and fulfilled its purpose. To teach both sons to drive properly, they mainly moved around Prague and the surrounding area, for which he was perfect (see my review).
However, their needs changed and they began to use the car for longer routes, where atmo 3 mugs were no longer quite enough, and in terms of space, it wasn’t the same for larger trips with girls and friends. It didn’t bother me that much on longer routes, but I usually went somewhere alone 😊

So I decided that after 5 years of service with us he will be replaced. So the selection began, almost half-yearly, what to replace it, and at the beginning I was faced with a fundamental question:

New or used, how much to give a second car to the family? So I set a limit in my head of around CZK 400,000, which basically eliminated all lower-middle class cars, because you can’t buy anything sensible for that money these days…

So the second question was, new small car or used lower middle car? In the end I got this:

– The new Dacia Sandero TCe 110 Stepway – when it is fine-tuned, the price is already quite high
– Storage Renault Clio TCe 140 – I found it at the dealer for 430,000 CZK
– Used VW Golf VII FL 1.4TSI 92kW – I wanted that but… see below
– Used Hyundai i30 1.4T-GDI 103kW HB/FB – OK, one of the options
– Used Renault Megane TCe 115/140 HB – more like the 115k engines and not much equipment…
– Used Škoda Scala 1.0TSI 81kW – the price/performance ratio is not great and the 1.5TSI Style is very high even for used pieces…

To confess, my favorite was the VW Golf after FL 2018/19 sd 1.4TSI 92kW, ideally in Marathon equipment, but I can’t find a decent one with a mileage of up to 100,000 km. Nothing anywhere, either Comfortline equipment or a high mileage or an overpriced price… Simply nothing that would appeal to me…

Well, one day I was browsing Sauto.cz in a hotel while on vacation and I came across a Hyundai i30 Fastback in red with 1.4TGDI 103kw with a mileage of 60,000 km and Style equipment in a Hyundai dealer’s car bazaar and … and I was in it. At first I think I’ll just go look and see. Then I went for a ride with my younger son and he was completely excited after the ride (as was I), eyes on the top of his head, so I succumbed. I bought the car right away without any further thought, we just fine-tuned the little things, like a new battery (it took a long time) and changing the discs and pads (they were KO). We fit into the Limit just fine, and the car was on Nexen tires = I immediately changed them to Fulda Sportcontrol 2 and it was calm.

I didn’t expect anything from the car, more like a better and significantly nicer shifter from point A to point B, but when I changed the tires I noticed that the car has a more elemental suspension at the back and it works (yes, I have it loaded, I knew it, but it dawned on me, only when I saw it 😊). The first drive with the car was fine, but immediately after picking it up from the dealer and changing to better tires, I took the first longer drive of about 130 km from Prague to Chalupa as a test drive. I was very, very surprised by how great it drives for an average car from, let’s say, an average manufacturer from the lower middle class, the flexibility of the engine, the tuning of the chassis and it makes you like a lot while driving, let’s say, very briskly. So I’m satisfied.

Engine, consumption, range

The 1.4 T-GDI engine is a nice surprise of this car, the classic 4-cylinder with a turbo has a power of 103kw (140k) and a torque of 242Nm, which is enough for normal driving and very brisk driving here and there. I was pleasantly surprised by its flexibility and minimal turbo lag, and it can be revved up a bit, even though it doesn’t perform much above 5,000 rpm, but that’s okay 😊 Even with a loaded car, it handles quite well, and with increasing load, as always, the dynamics decrease, but that’s probably normal for small volume turbos. It works the same way with the Octavka – I had a 1.4TSI and I have a 1.5TSI in company cars and it works similarly…

Regarding the speed, I haven’t tested the maximum yet, because we are in the Czech Republic, where a maximum of 130 km/h is allowed, right? So at 160 km/h you are very fast and without problems, the car willingly accelerates much higher, I have not been above 180 km/h, because in the Czech Republic it is already the limit for revocation of a driver’s license. When I give Germany, I’ll try how far it goes. The TP says Vmax 210km/h, an optimistic figure, but if the 1.5TSI 96kW gets there, why not this one?

The consumption of this 1.4T-GDI is a question of how you want to drive it. If you pull her by the mustache, it will be around 7.5-8l / 100km. If you calm down a little, you will drive smoothly and briskly, you will be able to easily reach the 6l/100km mark. My first journey was for 6.3l/100km, when I drove a combination of highway/district 40/60, highway at rest, smoothly around 140km/h / district around a hundred and comfortable 😊

During a really calm ride, I did a 60km trip with 5.9l/100km and my younger son got to 6.2l/100km just fine. So you can ride it comfortably even for little, all you have to do is want to.

What bothers me a little is the volume of the tank, it’s supposed to be 50l (Hyundai technical data), but somehow I don’t believe it. According to the on-board computer, the most I could see was 680 km, and so far I haven’t refueled more than 42 liters at a time. Well, I’ll have to focus on that. According to the TP, I should have 5.8l in the combination, which can be achieved, but I don’t think so… Well, we’ll see.

Drive ability

The driving characteristics of this car are very good for me, the car is stable, well controlled, sure and not tricky. The car does not lean in any significant way and sticks nicely to the selected track.
– classic McPherson in the front and in the back, wonder the world, we have more element and it helps him a lot in the corners 😊
– the steering seems a little artificial at the beginning, but it is quite accurate and you know what is happening under the front wheels, i.e. it tells you something here and there. I would also say something better than in OIV.
– the shifting of the 6-speed gearbox is quite accurate, quiet up to the 6th gear, here it seems to me that someone has shifted it a bit, but maybe it’s just my imagination. The other stages are fine, they are where they should be and they shift easily and accurately…

Interior / spaciousness

The interior of this i30 Style is classically black 😊, but well matched, it is of course a mix of soft and hard plastics. The ceiling is classically light gray and the seats are made of black and quite high-quality fabric. The interior is nice and made of relatively high-quality materials, nothing dents or peels or anything like that…

Among other things, the seats are a big surprise for me, they sit well on them, they have decent lateral guidance, so you won’t be surprised by a sharper turn and you won’t fall out. Mainly, you sit in the lower position very low, so you feel like you are in a sports car, which is supposed to resemble a fastback…

There is enough space in the front even for my figure of 188cm/105kg and I have everything within easy reach. I can fit in the back by myself, without major compromises. Only headroom, thanks to the falling roof, is not superfluous. Anyone shorter is fine and won’t complain about the lack of space. Yes, it’s more for two people, I wouldn’t wish the third person in the middle a long journey. But that can be said about almost every car in the lower middle class…

The trunk of the Fastback is not a big hit, of course it has nothing to do with the face lift Octávka, but for me it is quite sufficient for 4 people and I have no reservations about it. It has 436 liters and is pretty regular and compact, there is a range reserve under the bottom of the trunk, i.e. not full, but it is. Which I see as a big plus for glue sets today. The only complaint I have is probably the higher loading edge, but that’s a nice tax and a slightly different body of the car – I really don’t need to drive a refrigerator in it 😊

The equipment is STYLE, i.e. the second highest, only “N” Line is above it and it contains everything I require from a car:

– 17″ alloy wheels with a nice gray-silver design with 225/45 R17 tires
– Bi-xenons and fog lights with cornering lights
– Infotainment with 8″ display with standard Bluetooth, hands free and built-in navigation that works decently
– Apple Car Play, but only via cable
– Controlling “everything” on the leather steering wheel, has a small leather packet
– A million different assistants, especially the one for keeping in lanes can be turned off with a physical button = great 😊
– Cruise control
– Automatic air conditioning
– Heated seats and steering wheel (but I’m missing the windshield – it didn’t work)
– And much more…

Overall evaluation

Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase, I didn’t expect much from it, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a comfortable car with just the right engine. Who wants more, has the option. The “N” version is here and the 280k is worth it, it just takes a bit more money out of your wallet 😊

I honestly never expected to buy a car from Hyundai. Korean and especially after those times of advertising “mordor” when comparing with Škoda. But the new management of the importer corrected almost everything that the previous one had done, so I took them at their mercy. The car itself is excellent, so why not? 🙂

I will gradually add to the review according to my experience with the car, and if you want to know anything else, write in the discussion. I’ll be happy to answer.

Strengths

– Great red color and best suits the fastback
– Pleasant and flexible engine and especially 4-cylinder 😊
– Reasonable consumption of around 6.5 l
– Decent 6st. manual transmission and manual handbrake
– Good driving characteristics, readability of the car and decent steering response
– Decent seats, interior design and spaciousness
– Equipment Style
– 17″ very nice aluminum summer wheels
– Clear infotainment + Apple Carplay

Weaknesses

– Smaller trunk and higher loading edge – but I don’t mind
– Rear lights without LED, they look good, but for the year rv 2020 they should be LED. Especially with higher equipment
– There is no possibility of a heated front window
– The absence of a rear wiper may bother some, but it would only spoil the appearance of the car

Service experience (breakdowns, repairs):

After a month, I still can’t even rate it

Experience with a dealer (car dealership / car bazaar)

Štěpánek Auto na Kladno – excellent negotiations, both in the bazaar and in the Hyundai car showroom when selling accessories 🙂
