Former deputy Stella Alonzo will face trial for usurpation of qualities

The First Chamber of Appeals of the Criminal Branch has accepted the appeal presented by the Prosecutor’s Office Against Electoral Crimes. According to the prosecution, there is sufficient evidence to believe that former deputy Stella Alonzo could have committed the crime of usurpation of qualities, for which she should face trial.

The magistrates consider that certain elements were not considered by the judge of the Criminal Court of First Instance of Mixco. Therefore, they decided to revoke the dismissal granted in favor of Alonzo.

The Public Ministry accuses Stella Alonzo of having used her position in the Secretary of Social Works of the Mayor’s Wife in the Mixco Municipality to divert funds. These funds would have been used to purchase accessories and finance advertising for the electoral campaign of the then mayor, Otto Pérez Leal, in 2015.

In relation to this case, the closure of the process was decreed in favor of Pérez Leal and two others involved. Until now, these decisions are maintained, since the challenges presented by the prosecution rejected them.

Currently, the Appeals Chamber is expected to refer the file to the corresponding court to establish a hearing date. In this way, the resolution of the magistrates will be fulfilled, and Alonzo will face an oral and public debate to determine his guilt or innocence.
