Mayor Peter van der Velden of Leiden has an emergency ordinance proclaimed for the area around a library in the center of town. As part of the Pride Leiden event, a drag queen will read to children in the library on Nieuwstraat.
People who are thought to be disturbing public order are not allowed to enter the area until 1 p.m. out of “serious fears of a serious disturbance of public order”. Earlier, protests were announced around the reading.
The municipality recognizes that demonstrating is a fundamental right, but also says that serious disorder will not be tolerated. The municipality says that the children are central to the reading hour.
Announcement demonstration
The reading by drag queen Dina Diamond started at 10:30 am. There were several posts on social media with fierce reactions to the event. FvD Member of Parliament Van Meijeren, among others, announced X, formerly Twitterto go demonstrate.
In April, a reading afternoon by drag queens in Theater LantarenVenster in Rotterdam threatened to be disrupted. As a precaution, the activity was then quietly pushed forward for a few hours. By the time the protesters had gathered at the theater, the event had already ended.
