Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown – A Detailed Review and Gameplay Experience

At Gamescom we played a lot of games, but sometimes you get an exclusive taste of something you didn’t count on. This is how we were allowed to work for an hour Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crownthe latest installment in the series.

After an introduction in which the makers showed all kinds of things, we were allowed to race around for half an hour. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into the game, because for each car they have recorded different real sounds to make it sound as real as possible. In addition, with every car you get the opportunity to do standard things that you expect with a car, but are rarely in a game. For example, you can use turn signals, switch fog lights on or off, open or close the roof in certain cars and much more.

Weather conditions also affect driving behavior, so that every car reacts differently in rain, sun or snow. Traffic is different during the day than in the evening, making the world clearly a living entity. Not only that, but because it is a completely online experience, you will also encounter all kinds of other players in the open world. If you don’t encounter them on the street, you can also find them in one of the many hubs the game offers. You have to join a clan after which you can participate in all kinds of races to place yourself within this clan and gain access to higher circles. That also means that you get access to more expensive cars, other areas and more.

You can join two clans, the Streets that have a more modern take on cars, racing and lifestyle, or the Shops that are a bit more classic in their lifestyle and preference for cars. Each clan has six members that you must defeat in order to move up the ranks. So try Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown challenging you to explore everything and level up so that you can get the most beautiful and best cars to use in races. You can play against the other clan in four-on-four races and other ways to challenge each other.

During our play session, it felt like Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown tries to put its own twist on other similar games like The Crew of Forza Horizon. At first glance, that works reasonably well, with an additional level of detail added by the extent to which you can operate your car with, for example, the turn signals. Still, the question is how long such a game will remain fun if you are almost obliged to keep playing constantly to get the most out of it. Fortunately, there is enough content at release to keep you entertained for hours with the many races, challenges and other things.
