Violence Erupts at Anti-Immigrant Protest in New York City

At least five people, including Guardian Angels leader Curtis Sliwa, have been arrested after an anti-immigrant protest outside Gracie Mansion, the residence of Mayor Eric Adams, turned violent.

Another neighborhood protest against a migrant center also took place outside a Staten Island county school.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Kathy Hochul, extended the emergency declaration due to the arrival of thousands of migrants and the lack of federal funds to deal with the crisis.

“We continue to need funds and sites from the federal government to help cover the enormous cost of housing thousands of people in our country and in our state today. But we also ultimately need comprehensive immigration reform from Congress,” said Kathy Houchul, Governor of New York.

About 2,000 migrants are arriving every week and, according to the authorities, there is no longer space to house them.

“There are things that one as a migrant does not agree with, but one has to learn to deal with the laws here if at the moment it is what there is, well I think that an effort must be made, even if we do not agree, perhaps in a future can change things”, says Conrado Maldonado, a Guatemalan migrant.

Other neighborhood protests against the massive encampments in Queens Village and on Randall Island also took place this week.
