Controversy Surrounding King Vidor’s Adaptation of War and Peace: Audrey Hepburn and Costume Criticized by Russian Audience

It is difficult to find an even more unsuitable artist.

Director King Vidor in 1956 presented his version of the film adaptation of one of the main Russian novels “War and Peace”. Despite the fact that stars of the first magnitude of that time played in it, the film raised many questions from the Russian audience. In particular, due to the fact that most of the actors were completely different from those described in his book by Leo Tolstoy.

For example, the talented actress and public favorite Audrey Hepburn, who played Natasha Rostova, did not get into the image at all. For the young version of the 25-year-old heroine, she turned out to be too old, and for the adult, too young and fragile, the author of the Cinema-Graphia Zen channel noted. And his opinion was actively supported.

“I looked after ours. Not impressed. Even beloved Audrey,” wrote one of the commentators.

Also, readers were outraged that the costumes did not coincide with the era. Most people agreed that the role of Natasha Rostova was best done by Lyudmila Savelyeva in the Soviet film adaptation.
