Celebrate National Circus Day

Every September 2, a new version of National Circus Day is commemorated, the date on which various groups come together to celebrate this stage discipline with a great history and legacy in Chile.

Along with the free billboard in different spaces and cultural centers in the country, during the day the trajectory and excellence of various exponents of the traditional circus will also be recognized, an artistic manifestation that is part of the intangible cultural heritage of Chile.

The activities of Circus Day begin on Saturday, September 2, at 12:00 p.m., at the GAM Cultural Center, with an activity organized by the Union of Circus Artists, who will offer the public shows of clowns, juggling, hula hooping , among other techniques.

With the assistance of authorities from the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, David Salazar, Arturo Peña, Francisco Santana, Juana Aguilera, Rossana Cárdenas, José Cáceres, Luis Cáceres and María José Domínguez will also be recognized, all of them circus performers with extensive experience.

In the same GAM, at 6:30 p.m., the talk “Violeta Parra and the Circus” will be held, in which the artist’s link with this discipline will be addressed and how she crossed paths with the circus world in different episodes of her career. life. The conference, organized by the Violeta Parra Museum, will be given by Héctor Valencia, founder and manager of the first Itinerant Circus Museum in Chile.

In other regions such as Valparaíso, National Circus Day will be celebrated with free performances by the La Disparate Circo Company, which will present the work “Paradise crew, in search of the horizon”, on September 29 at 7:00 p.m. hours in the Blue Circus Tent, located in Cerro Barón.

In Tarapacá, the meeting “Educational practices from the circus arts” has been organized, an activity aimed at both agents of the sector and institutions linked to artistic education. Within the framework of this initiative, 4 presentations related to the transmission of circus practice at the regional level have been programmed. The event will take place at the Alto Hospicio Cultural Center on September 6 at 4:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, in the Biobío region, on September 8 at 7:00 p.m., a circus presentation will be offered to the public in Plaza Perú. On the same day, starting at 10:30 a.m., at Balmaceda Arte Joven (Biobío Headquarters) there will be a cycle of 8 workshops open to the community.

This activity is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Biobío Region, in collaboration with BAJ Biobío and agents of the circus community.

National Circus Day has been celebrated by law since 2017 on the first Saturday of September, the month in which the offer of shows traditionally grows with the arrival of spring.
