Bronx Professor Arrested for Luring and Abusing Women from El Salvador

A Bronx professor was arrested and accused by authorities of luring women from El Salvador to threaten and abuse them.

According to the attorney for the southern district of New York, Damian Williams, Jorge Alberto Ramos would have abused at least three victims in a period of 10 years.

“Ramos transported, abetted, enticed women to travel with promises of a better life, including educational opportunities from El Salvador to New York, then abused them,” Williams said in a statement.

According to the prosecution, Ramos allegedly made contact with the victims and sent them money and gifts while making promises of a better future in New York.

Ramos coordinated with ‘coyotes’ to transport them illegally to the country.

Once they arrived with him at his home in the Bronx, the suspect allegedly raped and abused them.

The prosecution assures that he tried to control them by ordering them, among other things, to stay inside the residence, trying to isolate them and threatening to hand them over to immigration for deportation.

Ramos, 43, faces two counts of instigating travel for the purpose of engaging in unlawful sexual activity, each count carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

In addition to two counts of transportation for the purpose of engaging in unlawful sexual activity, each charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

He is also accused of other crimes.

“He offered me a job” speaks victim of abuse

One of the victims agreed to speak with Univision 41 on condition of anonymity.

The woman reported that she was a minor when the alleged defendant paid a coyote to bring her from El Salvador.

“He offered me that I was going to have a job, that I was going to be able to study,” he said.

“The opposite happened because he told me that he had ordered me to be brought in to have sex with me, that I was not busy with anything else.”

“He told me that if I didn’t do it, he was going to send me to immigration and return me to my country”

Cases of sexual abuse are common, authorities warn

Iván Arbelo, director of the New York Department of Homeland Security, an institution that was part of the investigation, assures that unfortunately this is not an isolated case.

“It happens that many times the law and order agencies do not find out… the trafficking of women is young people who are walking freely, who have a cell phone and who perhaps do not identify themselves as victims, the same victim does not recognize herself as being sexually exploited,” he said.

According to figures from the National Center for Human Trafficking, New York is the fourth state with the most reported cases of sexual and labor exploitation.

Univision 41 tried to contact Ramos’s lawyer to obtain his version, but received no response.

If you believe you were the victim of rape, sexual assault, or sexual abuse committed by Ramos, authorities ask that you please contact 866-347-2423 or sextrafficking_outreach@hsi.dhs.gov and mention this case.
