Thierry Boeuf’s Tour d’Île-de-France saga:

The town has always been administered by communist mayors, except for a mandate between 2014 and 2020. The UMP mayor even wanted to rename a place Georges Marchais, a figure of the Communist Party in the 70s and 80s in favor of another Georges, the Professor Mathé, oncologist at the Paul Brousse hospital in Villejuif.

After a legal battle, the administrative court canceled the change of name disputed by the family of the former secretary general of the Communist Party, and in particular his wife, Liliane Marchais.

You can hear in our podcast George Marchais during the inauguration of the Villejuif Paul Vaillant Couturier terminus of metro line 7 in 1985. An inauguration in two stages: by the right and by the Communist Party.

In addition, Villejuif is well known for its shared gardens called family and collective gardens!

Finally Villejuif had the honors of a song by one of the greats of the French repertoire, Serge Reggiani, which pays tribute to all the patients of the Gustave Roussy hospital, the leading center for the fight against cancer in Europe.
